University College Birmingham has responded to the huge growth in the spa concept over the last decade with its new Spa Management with Hospitality programme, available at foundation degree and BA (Hons) level.
As the sector grows there is an increased demand for qualified staff to manage such facilities, and the course is designed to develop supervisory and management skills relevant to the service sector. The course focuses on the management aspects of spa facilities within the context of the hospitality industry, whilst developing high levels of knowledge, leadership and interpersonal skills needed to perform effectively within this sector.
The first year of the course introduces students to the concept of the spa, the functions of the hospitality industry and the range of activities that come under the umbrella of those titles. The first year also introduces students to the concepts and models of effective management practice.
The second year provides an analysis of the service encounter in the context of the business service environment, the role of marketing and financial management and the importance of managing human resources. Option modules allow students to study a subject more specific to their interests including spa treatments or food and well-being.
In the third year, the focus shifts to evaluation of the strategic issues facing the spa industry both locally and globally whilst examining the concepts of international marketing and the higher-level operational management aspects of the sector.
Students are allocated a placement one day a week during years 1 and 2 of the programme. The placements are currently at a range of 5 star hotels in the Midlands, with the intention of gaining experience in all aspects of the Spa and Hospitality industry.
The College has excellent facilities and experienced staff to deliver such a programme.
